Tony Henley
Psychotherapist

About Tony

I am a BACP Accredited and UKCP registered Psychotherapist and Counsellor based in the South West of the UK. I trained at the Metanoia Institute, where I gained a Clinical Diploma in Person-Centred Therapy, alongside an MSc in Contemporary Person-Centred Psychotherapy. I am also EMDR qualified, trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD, and provide couples counselling.

I work in private practice supporting individuals and couples across a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties. Prior to this, I worked as a Police Crisis Negotiator and within specialist services including Cruse Bereavement Support, occupational health services within the public sector, and therapeutic support for a religious organisation.

I provide a safe, compassionate, and confidential environment where you can feel genuinely heard and understood. Whether you are experiencing work-related stress, anxiety, low mood, bereavement, relationship difficulties, trauma, or are seeking a deeper understanding of yourself, I aim to offer therapy tailored to your individual needs.

My approach is grounded in empathy, authenticity, and respect. I believe therapy is not only for times of crisis, but also an opportunity for personal growth, greater self-awareness, and lasting change. Taking the first step towards therapy can feel difficult, but it is often the beginning of something meaningful.

I am fully insured and registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, UK Council for Psychotherapy, and relevant EMDR professional bodies, and I abide by their ethical frameworks and professional standards. I am also registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

The therapy

My practice is grounded in the work of Carl Rogers, one of the pioneers of Humanistic Psychotherapy. Alongside Person-Centred Therapy, I also provide EMDR therapy where appropriate.

Rogers believed that each of us has the innate capacity for growth, healing, and living a meaningful and fulfilling life. However, difficult life experiences, trauma, loss, relationships, or challenging circumstances can sometimes block or distort this natural process. Therapy offers a space in which these experiences can be explored safely, helping you reconnect with yourself and move towards greater clarity, resilience, and self-acceptance.

He believed that when people experience a therapeutic relationship built on empathy, genuineness, and acceptance, meaningful psychological change can occur. These values continue to form the foundation of my work with clients today.

‘It is the client who knows what hurts, what directions to go, what problems are crucial, what experiences have been deeply buried.’

EMDR

What is it?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a comprehensive psychotherapy approach that helps people process and recover from experiences that may be affecting their mental health and emotional wellbeing.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation — often side-to-side eye movements — alongside therapy within a structured and evidence-based framework. This process helps the brain reprocess distressing or traumatic experiences that may feel “stuck” or unresolved.

Traumatic or overwhelming experiences can sometimes leave behind difficult images, emotions, beliefs, and physical sensations that continue to affect daily life long after the event has passed. These unresolved experiences may contribute to anxiety, low mood, panic, PTSD, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, or emotional overwhelm.

EMDR helps the brain process these experiences in a healthier way, reducing their emotional intensity and allowing you to develop a different perspective on what has happened. Many people find that distressing symptoms lessen over time, leaving them feeling calmer, more grounded, and better able to move forward.

As an EMDR qualified therapist, I integrate EMDR carefully and collaboratively, working at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you.

Support for Organisations

I offer comprehensive psychological support for businesses and organisations, including onsite critical incident support following workplace accidents, traumatic events, or emergencies.

Drawing on my background in crisis negotiation, psychotherapy, trauma work, and occupational settings, I provide calm, professional, and compassionate support to both individuals and teams during challenging situations. My aim is to help organisations respond effectively to critical incidents while supporting the emotional wellbeing of staff.

Alongside incident response support, I provide tailored training, consultancy, and wellbeing workshops designed to enhance mental health awareness and promote healthier workplace cultures.

Areas of support can include:

  • Critical incident and post-trauma support
  • Workplace stress and burnout
  • Resilience and emotional wellbeing
  • Mental health awareness training
  • Trauma-informed approaches in the workplace
  • Managing difficult conversations
  • Staff wellbeing and psychological safety
  • Support for leadership teams and managers

All services are tailored to the specific needs of your organisation, whether you are seeking immediate support following an incident or longer-term wellbeing strategies for your workforce.

Please feel free to get in touch to discuss how I may be able to support you and your organisation.
